Transfer Media Files From Samsung Galaxy S3 To iPhone 5

It is relatively easy to transfer media files when you upgrade from one iPhone version to another. However, that is not the case if you are transferring data from an Android phone to an iPhone. A lot of Android phone users these days are making a shift to the iPhones. The task of transferring the data and settings in their previous Android phone, say Samsung Galaxy 3, to their brand new iPhone 5 becomes too daunting.
Many of them settle to start afresh and leave their files and settings behind in the old phone. However, it is possible to transfer files, contacts, videos and photos from old files to the new one by following a few straightforward steps.

Initial set-up and steps

Users can transfer files to their iPhone 5 from Samsung Galaxy 3 after they have set up their iPhone and activated it. The following step-by-step instructions can be followed to make this transfer. • Search for VCF file and save it in the folder as well since this file has all your contacts. Drop this folder to the iPhone data folder. You are all ready to transfer this data to your iPhone, provided you have set it up and activated it.

Transferring music

Connect your iPhone to iTunes. In order to transfer music, all you have to do is drag the iPhone data folder on the desktop folder (which now has the data from your Galaxy 3) over the name of your iPhone seen in the iTunes sidebar. This will transfer all the songs in that folder to your iPhone 5. This technique can be used to transfer any music file on your desktop to your iPhone 5. The transferred music can be found in Music app of iPhone 5.

Transferring photos and videos

On the left sidebar of iTunes, you will be able to see your phone’s name. Click on the phone’s name. Go to main window and access photos tab. Check out the option ‘Sync photos’. A drop-down menu will appear on which you have to click ‘Choose folder’.

You can then navigate to the folder containing the data from your Galaxy 3 on your desktop. You can see that your photos have now appeared in the Photos app on your iPhone 5. Videos can also be transferred in a similar manner.

Windows 8 supports two types of user accounts that users can use to log on to the computer. The two types of user accounts that Windows 8 supports are:

• Microsoft Account – Microsoft account is an account that can be created either on Hotmail.com or live.com. Since the accounts on these sites can be accessed from anywhere in the world, users can use the same account credentials to log on to any Windows 8 computer that is connected to the Internet.
• Local Account – Unlike Microsoft account, a local user account is authenticated from the local Security Account Manager (SAM) file that is located in the system drive of the computer. When Windows 8 is installed in a home computer, many users use ‘PC settings’ window to create a new local user account because of its simple wizard.
• From Computer Management Snap-in – Computer Management snap-in can be initiated by right-clicking the Computer icon that is available in the left pane in Libraries window. In production environments, most administrators prefer creating local user accounts from the Computer Management snap-in because it allows them to add the newly created users to one or more groups using easy wizards.

Irrespective of the process, administrative privileges are always required to create a local user account on a Windows 8 computer.

To create a local user account on a Windows 8 computer using ‘PC settings’ window, administrators must follow the steps below:

1. Use administrator account credentials to log on to Windows 8 computer.
2. From the Start screen, click Desktop tile to view the desktop.
3. From the desktop screen, hover mouse to the bottom right corner of the window.
4. From the displayed options in the right, click Settings.
5. From the bottom of Settings pane, click Change PC settings.

Easy File Sharing Through Dropbox

Dropbox is one of the most useful applications in existence today. Dropbox folder synchronizes the files and folders in all your devices, be it PC, tablets or mobile phones through a single folder called the Dropbox folder. This application is highly useful for backing up your files, sharing files with others, accessing files through the web and exploiting the API. To add to its many benefits, Dropbox application also provides free space of 2GB on installation.

Sharing problems in Dropbox

Dropbox sharing did have some complications before, especially for folks who are slightly tech-challenged. Users found it difficult to find the correct location of a file while sharing the link to the file. And in the worst case scenarios, when everything is functioning well, one of the users might delete an important file due to all the confusion which makes it disappear from everybody’s Dropbox folder!

1. Right click on any file contained in the Dropbox folder. Select Get link option given in the Dropbox menu. The URL of the file will be generated.

3. Share the URL with anyone you want to share the file with.

An alternate way to share files through Dropbox is to actually log in to www.dropbox.com. You have to then find the folder or file you want to share. Click on the Get Link icon of the folder or file.

Those who access the URL can view the file as well as its contents. However, they will not be able to do any modifications such as editing or deleting of the contents of the file or folder. Just a single link is needed for even folders to be shared. This makes sharing of multiple files easy.

How to remove sharing?

Sharing can be easily removed as well. All you have to do is to visit the URL one more time. After that the cog icon given at the top right part of the page has to be clicked. Select Remove link. This removes sharing of that particular file or folder. Alternatively, the website menu has Links option. The shared folders and files can be seen here. You can easily remove those links you wish to no longer share, right from here.

Conclusion

Sharing files has never been so easy with Dropbox. On clicking the Get link option, URL will be generated for the selected file or folders which can then be copied and send to whoever you wish to share the file with. The same is true for any file or folder on Dropbox.com.
Any shared link can be easily removed from sharing as well. The files shared can also be viewed by people who do not have Dropbox installed. The people with whom the files have been shared can view the contents of the file but cannot edit or delete the contents.

My Pictures Folder Not Showing Thumbnails

Don’t you just hate it when you go to your pictures folder or library and your picture folder is not showing thumbnail previews? This means your picture folder becomes very confusing and not being able to see the thumbnail previews for your pictures makes it extremely hard to find anything at all.
Here is a screenshot of my picture folder when the thumbnail pictures are not showing. I have Windows live Photo Gallery installed as the main picture editing program so this is the icon you can see. But I want to see a mini preview of my actual pictures.

How to show thumbnail previews in Windows

To show thumbnails in my pictures folder is the same process for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Seven. It is all done by accessing the Folder Options, the same place you go to show hidden files. Just a slightly different path to get there.

Windows Seven:

1. Open your picture folder by choosing pictures from the start menu.
2. You will see a menu at the top. Click on organize.
3. From this menu choose Folder and search options. See the screenshot below.

4. Folder Options will open. Go to the view tab.
5. Untick the option that says “always show icons, never thumbnails“. See the screenshot below.

6. Now simply press apply. My changes were instant but some computers might need to restart to see a difference. See the screenshot below of the same pictures in my picture folder.

Show thumbnails in Vista:

To actually see a menu in Windows vista that will let you access these options you might need to press on the ALT key. When you can see the menu, you can follow the instructions below.

Windows XP:

1. Go to the Start menu at the bottom left corner.
2. Choose My Computer.
3. Go to the menu at the top and choose Tools, then choose Folder options.
4. Choose View from the tabs at the top.

Keep All Working Files in One Folder

You know how your desktop is cluttered with individual files of all those different projects you are hard at work on? It’s really slowing your computer down. Create a folder and put all the different documents in there. This will not only help your computer to run faster immediately, it will also help you to know where all of your documents are at once and also make it easy for you to back everything up at once.

Never Store Personal Files on the Root C: Drive

The root folder may seem like an easy place to store files, but it makes you very prone to losing everything all at once. By doing this you could corrupt your disk file table which could lead to a NTLDR is missing error message when you start up the computer. This is terrible, meaning you may have lost just about everything stored in that folder and possibly on the computer as a whole. Any personal files on the Root C: drive should be moved to a documents folder immediately/

External Hard Drive Not Working? Fix It Now.

Is your external hard drive not working? Don’t worry—there’s a good chance you can fix it. Even if you can’t, you can probably retrieve all or most of your important information off of it. Just follow these seven steps:

1—Check Cables

I know, I know—the cables were probably the first thing you tried. But you should know that external hard drive cables can be more complicated than you think. We’ve discussed cable crosstalk elsewhere, so let me just give you the short version:
Cables on your computer can interfere with each other, preventing your external hard drive from sending information to your computer correctly. You can test for this problem really easily: unplug everything from your computer that you don’t need when you plug in your external hard drive. Then make sure the cord from your computer to your external hard drive doesn’t cross any other cords. In our external hard drive buying guide cables are a big issue.

2—Some USB Hubs Stink

I love USB hubs. I remember the days before USB when you could only add as many accessories to your computer as you had plugs and expansion slots. But some USB hubs stink—they’re cheap and they cause more problems than they’re worth.
If you’re connecting your external hard drive through a USB hub, try connecting it directly to your computer to see if that fixes the problem. If it does, either continue connecting it directly to your computer or buy a higher quality USB hub.
As a side note, you should probably never connect your external hard drive to a USB hub connected to another USB hub. Each extra level of separation slows down the speed of the communication between your external hard drive and your computer, and USB starts to fail when the communication gets too slow, leading to external hard drive not working errors.

3—Damaged Cables

Most of us are used to electrical cables which seem to work forever, but USB data cables aren’t so robust. Think about it, the typical electrical cable just sends a bunch of electricity over just two or three thick wires (negative, positive, and sometimes ground). But a USB cable features six or more fine wires, depending on which version of USB you use.
Those fine wires in a USB cable tend to break if you mishandle your cables. It’s happened to me, klutz that I am. It can also happen that you get a defective cable.
The same problem applies to eSATA cables, which are also made of fine wires which must transmit huge quantities of data.
If you have spare cables for your external hard drive—or you can borrow some from a friend—now is the time to try them. If you don’t have any spares, buy some—you can almost always use them for something else later, so the investment won’t be wasted.

4—Click, It’s Dead

If your external hard drive is not working and it’s making clicking or grinding noises, I have some bad news—it’s dead or will soon be dead. There’s nothing you can do to fix it.
But maybe you can still get your files off of it.
First, let’s be clear, the only external hard drives which make clicking noises are magnetic hard drives or hybrid hard drives which include both a magnetic and a solid state component.
The clicking or grinding noise you hear is most often caused by the motor in your hard drive trying to spin the data disks, but the disks are sitting on worn or misshapen ball bearings.
If you can fix the ball bearings even temporarily, the disks will be able to spin and you’ll be able to fix your hard drive.
The solution is simple, but strange and DANGEROUS: you need to freeze your hard drive to shrink the ball bearings back into a more ball-like shape. We’ve talked about the technique you should follow elsewhere—and discussed the dangers involved—so if you want to try this technique, please see that extended discussion.

5—Jumper Position

If you’re using an old IDE (ATA/PATA) magnetic hard drive with a USB cable adapter, beware that you may need to set the jumpers on the hard drive before you can successfully connect it to your computer. The jumpers on your hard drive are the little pins on the back of your hard drive near the power and data cables—there’s usually eight of them.. The pins usually have a small metal band around some of them—that’s your jumper.
The jumper connects two of the pins together electrically so your hard drive knows what it’s supposed to do. Most hard drives have jumper pin documentation printed on the hard drive: it will usually show you the pin positions for auto, single, master, and slave modes.
Read the documentation for your IDE-to-USB adapter to find which pin setting you need to use. Usually it’s “auto”, but sometimes it’s “single” or “master”.

6—The Perils Of Too Much Writing

Beware: if you have a solid state drive, you can only write data to it so many times. On a typical drive this is 100,000 or 1,000,000 times—which sounds like a lot until you think about how many times you save files to the drive each day and how many days are in a year.
The write limit applies to each sector on your hard drive, but once it’s reached in any one sector, the whole hard drive becomes fairly useless because Windows was designed for magnetic hard drives which fail all at once. When Windows sees one dead sector, it assumes the whole hard drive is dead.
There’s no way to continue writing new files to your hard drive once a sector dies, but you can still continue reading old files off of the hard drive, so at least your important files should be safe.

7—When All Else Fails

When all else fails, hire an expert. Dozens of companies specialize in recovering data from failed hard drives. But note that they’re all expensive. Your best protection from failure and the stress that comes with it is to make regular backups so that you’re prepared for an external hard drive not working problem.
